In 2020, during the Covid pandemic, our community expressed the need through a survey provided through Sacramento State University, that there was a place to gather for a healthy meal and social support.
That is when long time local ,Mary Edge, had a vision to bring these basic needs to the Senior community through a Senior center.
In 2022, Mary’s vision had come to fruition, recieving local and state recognition, and California Legislator Association certificate of recognition.
A group of longtime locals with a vested interest , formed a board of members to do just that.
It began with small hosted events that took place in local homes, and then quickly expanded to 50-60 Seniors, prompting the move to Casa Maria, which allowed for a greater expansion of Senior activities.
Please join us every Wednesday!

Mary Velasco Sellen was a woman of strength, compassion, and tireless service. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and raised in San Juan Bautista. Mary’s life reflected her unwavering commitment to her country, her faith, and her community. During World War II, Mary worked as a welder in the Oakland shipyards to support the war effort. Her dedication to Veterans never ended there-she remained a passionate advocate for those who served, and was an active. member of the VFW Auxiliary for many years. Mary made it her mission to ensure that veterans in her community were recognized, supported, and never forgotten.
Mary also had deep and enduring connection to the seniors of San Benito County. Through her 26 years of service as a County Social Worker, she championed programs that improved the lives of the elderly, advocated for their generations, wether through delivering meals, offering rides, or simply sitting and listening, Mary treated every senior as family.
She wore many hats throughout her life: certified mechanic, gas station owner, school bus driver, janitor, gardener, embroiderer, - but her most important roles were that of a community pillar. A fierce advocate for the vulnerable, and a source of wisdom and comfort for all who knew her. A woman of faith, Mary was a devoted member of old mission San Juan Bautista and supported numerous local organizations, including the Tres Pinos Alter Society and the Historical Society of San Juan.
Mary is remembered not only for her accomplishments but for her spirit. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the community she helped build.
